What to bring to your first ART appointment.
Valid ID
National ID, voter’s card, passport, or any government-issued photo ID.
HIV Test Result
Any recent result you have. The centre will retest you if needed. A reactive result is always confirmed with a second assay before diagnosis.
Current Medications
A list of everything you take, including traditional medicine. Helps identify interactions before prescribing starts.
Time
Your first visit takes several hours: counselling, baseline CD4 and viral load tests, clinical assessment. You will not leave with medication on day one.
Referral Letter (if any)
If referred from another facility or tested positive elsewhere, bring the letter and any documentation from that centre.
Support Person (optional)
Not required, but many people find it helpful. Your consultation is confidential regardless.
Questions about free HIV treatment.
QIs HIV treatment truly free? I have heard about hidden charges.
Antiretroviral drugs are free at government-approved ART facilities in Nigeria, NACA confirmed this publicly in 2025. Some facilities may charge for consultations or lab tests (CD4 count, viral load), but the ARV medication itself should never cost money. If a facility demands payment for ARVs, that breaches programme policy and should be reported to NACA.
QHow do I keep my status private at a busy hospital?
You are entitled to confidentiality at any healthcare facility. Your HIV status is protected medical information. If visibility at a major teaching hospital concerns you, a district general hospital offering the same programme often has shorter queues and fewer people who might know you. Speak to the HIV counsellor on arrival, who can advise on managing your privacy within the facility.
QCan I transfer my ART to a clinic closer to home?
Yes. A treatment transfer is standard. Collect a transfer letter from your current centre containing your history, current regimen, and recent lab results, then present it at the new facility. Make sure you have enough medication to cover the transition period without a gap.
QWhat if I cannot reach any of these facilities?
Most LGAs have at least one primary or secondary facility enrolled in the ART programme. NACA’s directory covers all levels. General hospitals in your state capital are the most reliable alternative. For remote locations or access difficulties, contact NACA at naca.gov.ng for the nearest accessible site.
