PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emergency HIV prevention medicine taken after a possible exposure to the virus. It must be started within 72 hours of exposure and taken every day for 28 days without interruption. The sooner it starts, the better it works.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prevention medicine for HIV-negative people at ongoing risk of exposure. Taken consistently, oral PrEP reduces the risk of HIV from sex by about 99%. It’s recommended for anyone with an HIV-positive partner, multiple partners, inconsistent condom use, or other circumstances that place them at continued risk. See who should use PrEP.

Daily oral PrEP is a pill taken every day. It’s the most widely used option, highly effective when taken consistently, and available now in several trusted brands.

Lenacapavir is an injection given just twice a year. In the PURPOSE 1 trial there were zero infections among 2,134 women who received it. It’s available now through Zivoko.

CAB-LA (cabotegravir) is an injection given every two months. It’s available on request: message us and we’ll confirm supply and timing.

PEP is for after a possible exposure. It’s a short emergency course that must begin within 72 hours. PrEP is for before exposure. It’s ongoing prevention for people at continued risk.

If you’ve just had a possible exposure and aren’t already on PrEP, you need PEP now. If your risk is ongoing, you can move straight from PEP to PrEP when your PEP course ends, with no gap in protection.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless your next dose is less than 4 hours away. In that case, skip the missed dose and carry on as normal. Never take two doses at once.

PEP is generally well tolerated. Some people have mild side effects in the first week, such as nausea, tiredness, headache or loose stools, which usually ease as the body adjusts. Taking PEP with food can help with nausea.

No. PrEP is only for HIV-negative people. If you’re living with HIV, you need HIV treatment (ART) instead, which is free across Nigeria.
