Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency HIV prevention treatment taken after a possible exposure to HIV. When started early and taken correctly, PEP significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection.

What PEP Is Used For

PEP is recommended after recent, high-risk exposure to HIV, including:

Unprotected sex (vaginal or anal)
Condom breakage or slippage
Sexual assault
Needle stick injury
Sharing needles or sharp objects
Contact of blood or body fluids with broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, mouth)

PEP is not for routine use and is not a substitute for condoms or PrEP.

When to Start PEP

PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) of exposure
The earlier, the better; ideally within the first 24 hours
PEP is not effective if started after 72 hours

If more than 72 hours have passed, PEP is generally not recommended.

How to Take PEP (Usage Instructions)

Take one dose every day, at the same time daily
Continue treatment for the full 28 days
Do not skip doses
Take with or without food (unless advised otherwise)
If you miss a dose:
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed dose; do not double

Stopping early or missing doses reduces effectiveness.

Before Starting PEP

You should:

Confirm that exposure occurred within 72 hours
Be willing to take the medication daily for 28 days
Understand that PEP is preventive, not a treatment for HIV

If you already know you are HIV-positive, PEP is not appropriate, you need HIV treatment instead.

HIV Testing and Follow-Up

An initial HIV test is recommended before or at the time of starting PEP
Repeat HIV testing is advised at:
- 4–6 weeks
- 3 months
- 6 months (depending on guidance)
Avoid unprotected sex during the PEP period and until follow-up testing confirms HIV-negative status

Possible Side Effects

Most people tolerate PEP well. Mild side effects may include:

Nausea
Fatigue
Headache
Diarrhea
Dizziness

These effects usually resolve within a few days. Do not stop PEP without professional advice.

Seek medical attention if you experience severe reactions.

PEP does not guarantee 100% protection
Effectiveness depends on:

- Taking every dose correctly
PEP does not protect against other STIs or pregnancy
For frequent or ongoing HIV risk, consider PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) instead
