The OraQuick HIV Self-Test is a simple oral test you do yourself. You gently swab your upper and lower gums, place the swab in the tube, and read your result in 20 minutes. There’s no blood and no needle.
When to Test
- OraQuick detects HIV antibodies, which take time to develop. It gives a reliable result 3 months (12 weeks) after an exposure.
- Tested sooner? A negative result may be too early to be sure. Test again at 3 months, or ask us about a lab test, which can detect HIV earlier.
- For routine checks, if you’re sexually active, testing every 3 to 6 months is recommended.
How to Use It
- Don’t eat, drink or use mouthwash or toothpaste for 30 minutes before testing. Remove any dentures
- Swab once along your upper gums and once along your lower gums
- Put the swab in the tube and leave it for 20 minutes
- Read the result between 20 and 40 minutes. Don’t read it after 40 minutes
Full instructions are inside the pack. If anything is unclear, message us and we’ll talk you through it.
Reading Your Result
- One line (next to “C”): negative. No HIV antibodies were found. If your last possible exposure was less than 3 months ago, test again at 3 months
- Two lines (at “C” and “T”), even if one is faint: reactive. This is not a diagnosis. It must be confirmed with a laboratory test. Don’t panic, and message us so we can guide you to confirmatory testing
- No line at “C”: invalid. The test didn’t work. Use a new kit
Good to Know
- OraQuick is very accurate at ruling out HIV, but as with any self-test, a small number of infections can be missed, especially soon after an exposure
- If you take PrEP or HIV treatment, an oral self-test may not be reliable. Ask us about a lab test instead
- Testing is private. Your result is yours to share or not
Looking for more than HIV? The Venchecker 4-in-1 kit checks for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C in one test. To understand test timing, read the HIV window period explained.
